The Bear and The Maiden Fair

Warning, spoilers are all through this post. Read at your own risk.

There are so many questions set out in this episode. First of all, if you want to know about who is torturing Theon then read this. The answer is no different.  If you would like to know why then formulate your own theories.  There is much to be discussed about the psychological issues going on with the Bastard of Bolton.  He is evil, pure unadulterated evil that simply takes pleasure in hurting others.  Theon is a hated character and a prized victim that fell into his lap and he can literally do whatever he wants with him. It’s as simple as that, the guy gets off on hurting the lordling that nobody would bother to ransom. He will keep torturing Theon for no other reason than he just enjoys hurting people and he can hurt Theon as much as he wants with no one to stop him.

Robb’s Baby

This part of the show really bothers me. If nothing else the one this that is really important in this story and series is tradition and nobility.  Robb broke his vows but he would NEVER have done it with a commoner from Valaryia. Such things are just not done in the world of Fire and Ice.  In the books he does break his vow to House Frey by bedding and then marrying a western woman of Noble birth.  She and Robb are truly in love but do not conceive a child.  Later we find out that her mother was in cahoots with Tywin Lannister the whole time and giving her daughter “moon tea” in the guise of a fertility potion.  For those of you who don’t know, “moon tea” is the morning after pill for the ladies of Westros. So Robb never conceives a child in the book and has no true heir to follow him.  I do not know what the show is intending to do with this pregnancy and will be interested to see where it goes.

Sansa and Tyrion

This is being drawn out much more than it ever was in the books.  In the book Sansa had no idea she was being wed to Tyrion until she was ushered down the aisle in what she suddenly realized was a wedding gown.  Tyrion was always kind to Sansa but she was much too guarded to ever trust him.  It is a shame as Tyrion is one of the only truly real good guys in this story and she is simply a naive and silly girl. Their marriage will be a very unhappy one in which Tyrion cannot bring himself to bed this unwilling child and Sansa’s nightmare of a life keeps getting worse.

The Hound Capturing Arya

For all this guy’s flaws he is a sucker for all Stark women.  He was hopelessly in love and obsessed with Sansa Stark long before he crossed paths with Arya, and I think the opportunity was just too good to pass up for him. In Arya I think he sees a kindred spirit that he develops a strange sort of respect for.  Despite the impression he gives off, the Hound is a true and honest person. He is rough and angry at the world but he has a strange sense of honor that few ever recognize in him. He did many evil things but simply in the service of an evil lord. He is loyal to a fault and you can’t hold that against him. The Hound will take Arya and in attempt to get himself in the good graces of the Wolf King. It will be a fruitless measure as the downfall of the King of the North will coincide with his efforts.  It will be interesting to see where the show takes Arya from there.

RYAN’S REVIEW

I feel the need to begin this one with a disclaimer; I know it’s a silly movie.  It came out when I was in high school and despite the fact that at the time I was already established as a movie snob I still liked it.  After all, this movie was specifically made for people my age and although my instincts told me to hate it I still became enamored with the fun of the film.  There is nothing serious about this movie but that is obvious from the very beginning when the crowd at the joust is chanting a Queen song.  I liked that they blended classic rock and contemporary comedy with the medieval theme and I think this movie is great for just sitting back and enjoying from time to time.

This movie has a great cast and I think they all have great chemistry that only makes their performances better.  Heath Ledger was a terrific actor that died much too young.  He was just coming into his own as an actor and had he lived might be one of the most sought after leading men of the day.  When this movie came out he was just beginning to really break out.  He had burst onto the scene with 10 Things I Hate About You and then co-starring with pre-crazy Mel Gibson in The Patriot. This movie was his first leading role and I think he was a great choice.  It’s a movie made for his target audience at the time which was specifically the age I was when the movie came out.  His entourage in the movie was made up of great actors as well and he had great chemistry with them.  This was the first movie I had ever seen Paul Bettany in and I really think he stole every scene he was in.  He brought life to what might have otherwise been a dismal movie and I have been a big fan ever since.  His career hasn’t been as big as I think it should be and that continues to confuse me. However I think Bettany is very talented and would really like to see more of him.  I think Alan Tudyk is very funny, especially in this film.  He plays the dumb guy that is quick to anger and I think he is hilarious.  When he is threatening Bettany with violence if he betrays them and can’t even find words to describe what he will do to him I laugh every time.  “PAIN, lots of pain!” is all he can say and I think it’s so funny.  Re-watching the movie this time I specifically spent a lot of time watching Mark Addy.  I like Addy and think he has been great in many movies but it’s funny to look back and watch him in a role like this after seeing him play King Robert on HBO’s Game of Thrones I thought Addy was excellent in that part and it’s interesting to see him in such a different role.

As for the other actors in this film I think Rufus Sewell was good enough as the bad guy.  I do think he is the weakest of all the actors in the movie but maybe it’s just because he is playing the guy nobody is supposed to like. He has that creepy eye thing going on that makes him a good villain, I can relate to his problem as my eyes tend to look the same way once I have had a few too many drinks. One thing I am still curious about twelve years later is “what’s up with Shannyn Sossamon?” This was her first role in a film and I thought the sky was the limit for her afterwards.  I don’t know that she does anything really flashy acting wise but she is such a beautiful woman I figured we would see her all over the place in time. Sadly it hasn’t happened and I don’t know why.  She is still out there but hasn’t done anything really significant in the longest time. Barely worth mentioning is the role of James Purefoy who has a small but significant role in the film.  I only really think he is worth mentioning because he is part of The Following right now and that’s gotten plenty of buzz.

This movie makes a lot of references to The Canterbury Tales but this is not The Knight’s Tale from the collection of stories.  However I still like the references because when the movie came out I was an English 4 Honors class and we spent a lot of time going over the work of Geoffrey Chaucer.  I like that Bettany plays the part of Chaucer and that he mentions immortalizing the summoner and the pardoner in fiction.  Which of course, anybody familiar with the work of Chaucer will remember those two were immortalized as wicked men. Though nothing about this movie is based in fact other than references to Chaucer and the Black Prince of Wales they did loosely make an effort.  There is chapter of Chaucer’s life in which nobody really knows what he was doing and in this story we are seeing what the writer imagined he might have been doing.  Totally fiction but something fun to play with as a writer and a lot of fun to watch as a viewer.

This movie received mixed reviews when it came out specifically because of its use of contemporary classic rock and 70’s style.  I think that was part of what made the movie so much fun though and I still enjoy watching it.  I might be partial to the movie because of my age when it came out but I still think there is plenty to enjoy about this one today. You can’t take it too seriously or you are doomed.  It’s worth your time because it gives us a chance to see an actor that we can’t see anymore and because Paul Bettany was really exceptional. This movie is a lot of fun and if you get an opportunity to see it you should hang out with it for a while and enjoy.

AMBER’S REVIEW

I have always liked this movie. I think it’s nice to have a movie that is set in this time period and is a funny take on it instead of serious one. I really miss that guy, Heath Ledger. He was so attractive and one hell of an actor.

aknightstale

This isn’t a horrible poster. I don’t think that you really know what the movie is about at all, but not really in a good way. I just feel like the poster is trying to capitalize on Ledger’s beauty. The typography is nice, but not really Knight-like at all. I definitely like the movie more than this poster.

The Office Series Finale

I was watching old episodes of this show recently and it reminded me how good it used to be.  Seasons 1-3 are solid gold and still have me laughing years later and after multiple viewings.  Since then I wouldn’t say it all went downhill because there were many great episodes afterwards and many that were just good enough to keep us going.  I always thought the show got a bit too silly in the later years as Steve Carell prepared to exit the show.  Once he was gone I was surprised to find that the show seemed to get a bit better for a while before dragging again.  I did not like the James Spader episodes and thought enough was enough for Dunder Mifflin.  However this past season has been a pleasant surprise.  I think Clark Duke has been an excellent addition to the cast and Ellie Kemper just keeps getting better and better.  The show is winding down now and will be over for good in merely a couple of weeks.  This show may not be as great now as it once was but I will still miss it.  I have been an avid viewer for over eight years now and it’s always hard to say goodbye to something after that long.

I have read only a little about the series finale but I know it will involve a wedding.  There are many guest appearances in the episode including Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak so I am making what I would call a safe assumption in that the episode will involve a wedding between Ryan and Kelly.  I suppose the finale wouldn’t be fitting without some closure to that long standing relationship.  I do not know this but simply feel safe in assuming that is what will happen.  The big question as to the final episode is of course “Will we see Michael Scott again?” I have read conflicting reports in regards to this.  Steve Carell was not on the list of guest appearance I read and his people have said more than once that he is not returning.  Recently there has been speculation though that he is making some sort of small guest cameo during the last episode.  I hope it is not like the cameo we saw of him in Life’s too Short in which he simply appeared through FaceTime on Ricky Gervais’s computer.  That would be horribly disappointing, nearly as disappointing as an ending to this show without an appearance from one of its best characters.

I thought Michael Scott got way too over the top long before his exit from the show and I did not miss him when he was gone.  However having seen so much without him I have found that I do miss the character and the presence of Steve Carell on the show.  I was actually watching season 3 the other day just to kick back and enjoy the good old days of the show when I decided to write this. I hope the finale episode of The Office is one that makes us all laugh like we did in season 3 when the show was the best of the best.  I also hope we do see Steve Carell, because the show wouldn’t be closed right without him.

While I’m on the subject I would like to go over something that’s been on my mind about Jim and Pam.  The show got everything it could out of this relationship years ago and everything sense has been monotonous.  To be perfectly honest I don’t really think John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer even have good chemistry with one another.  As two lovers divided by circumstance I think they were great.  They loved each other from a distance and seemed to be perfect for one another but once they actually got together I thought the fire was burned out.  I don’t think they came off as a real couple or two people who actually loved each other even before this season threw a wrench in their relationship.  All the teasing of infidelity and divorce was awful too.  I always have a problem with the show I watch to laugh getting awkward or dramatic.  This show has always done far too much of that but I felt they really went too far with the Jim and Pam thing.

UPDATE**

Let me kindly revoke a few things I said earlier today about Pam and Jim.  The episode that has aired this evening has been nothing short of incredible and I particularly admire how the writers brought something from the past back into the backbone relationship of the show. The letter from the tea kettle was particularly brilliant and I really thought it was awesome.

Also, it appears I am mistaken about the wedding in the season finale.  I assumed too soon that it would be Ryan and Kelly getting married but I am happy to be wrong when it means something better is in order. I had always hoped for a reuniting of Dwight and Angel but eventually felt they went too far to make it happen.  In truth I still feel they have gone too far to make this a happy ending for either Dwight or Angela.  We are meant to overlook several things in order to see the love the show ultimately built up to but I don’t buy it.  The show got too weird with Angela’s character over the years to make this a seriously happy ending.  Since it is in the final end of the show though I will excuse it and simply laugh at what is to come. I was really impressed by tonight’s episode and I realize I underestimated the writers.  I shouldn’t make any assumptions now and should trust in the potential ahead of us.

The Walking Dead-Bad Lip Reading

I imagine many other fans are feeling the same loss I am on Sunday nights with the absence of The Walking Dead. Yeah we have Game of Thrones and Mad Men to fill the void, and while they both may be great shows, neither really satisfies the need we all have for violence and insanity. So as we wait for October to come and season 4 to begin I thought I would share something really funny I have found with you. Check out this video and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Just in case the video is pulled from my blog because I don’t really have any right to post it you can follow this link to see it on YouTube.

This probably isn’t enough to get you through the next several months so let me encourage you to simply read the comics.  There is literally ten years worth of this story out there available to all of us and not only is it awesome but it is far better than anything we have seen in the show.  I have come to love the show, but like many adaptations is simply doesn’t and can’t possible live up to the source.  If you are interested in reading the comic then follow this link and start there.

Game of Thrones

There are several potential spoilers in this post so read at your own risk.

I am a huge fan of this series.  I began by watching season one of the show on HBO a couple years ago and then picked up the first book one day.  About 6000 pages later I have been more than a bit obsessive as a reader.  I own all the books on audio tape and over time have listen to each one of them in turn at least three times a piece.  I love these books and this epic world of never ending conflict.  There is so much to be learned from it and I do in fact think I have learned quite a few things from this series.  Having said all that I must say watching the show has now become very difficult.  There is just no possible way for the show to live up to expectations from a reader’s point of view.  Season one was pretty good but the story was so much smaller back then.  When they reached Clash of Kings in season 2 the story expanded so much that the show seemed too askew to me.  The story was simply too large and too epic to fit within the time frame or budget restraints of a network television show.

I have liked parts of season three here and there.  I’ll admit that the depiction of Daeynerys sacking the city of Astopor was one of the coolest things I have ever seen in any TV show.  Each episode this year I will admit has offered a scene or two that I think was incredible and enjoy the opportunity of being able to see.  When writing about the series I don’t really know which direction to go.  At this point in the series there are so many open story lines that there is a chance to offer elaboration to so much. To start with I want to begin with Theon.  First of all, we don’t really find out what is going on with Theon until book five and by then he is barely Theon at all.  In fact, when you find out what is going on with him he is Reek, “Reek, Reek, it rhymes with weak”. Reek is the product of the Bastard of Bolton, Ramsey Snow/Bolton. Ramsey tortures Theon until there is absolutely nothing left of him, he isn’t even a shadow of himself and is actually more like a dog that just does what you tell it.  He takes several of his fingers and toes, knocks most of his teeth out, and cuts off “that other thing,” presumably his manhood.

Ramsey’s father, Lord Roose Bolton is actually involved in a scheme that will unfortunately bring an end to the story line of our young wolf king.   I took it hard when reading the books because Robb was without doubt my favorite and the next in line after Eddard who I initially thought to be the greatest because he was played so brilliantly by Sean Bean. Unfortunately the story progresses so far that you reach a point where Eddard and Robb Stark don’t even matter anymore and there is little left of their name in the midst of the conflict at hand. What’s funny is you reach a point where Sansa is the greatest hope for the Starks.  Let me ask you something honestly, when Sansa is the greatest hope for your family is it really worth going on at all?  I’m just kidding but come on, she can’t step into the shoes of her older brother no way no how and there is no beating around the bush.

I might update this post a couple more times as the week progresses.  If you have any pressing questions about this series or what might potentially happen based on what went down in the book then by all means leave me a comment and I will get back to you.  Of course the show has proven time and again to be much different than the written series but if there is something you want to know then I would be happy to help.  When it comes to this show I am literally not capable of being an objective observer.  However I can’t help but be impressed with many things they have done this season.  Personally I believe that this show should be made for the readers of the book and not new people who don’t know any better about how deep it all goes.

I have to be a work early in the AM so I’m cutting this shorter than it would otherwise be but let me know about any lingering questions about the series.  I’m obsessed enough to love the opportunity to discuss it and the possibilities to come that it presents.

RYAN’S REVIEW

When I first saw the advertisements for this movie I specifically remember thinking about how stupid it looked. Another movie featuring Tom Cruise as a secret agent just seemed redundant and it wasn’t very successful when it hit theaters.  I don’t know what prompted us to watch this when it was available to rent but Amber and I were both shocked to find that we loved it.  It’s such a fun and lighthearted movie that it caught us by surprise. It’s so funny, and filled with fast paced action. This is the kind of movie that you can just sit back and enjoy.  Turn your mind off and just watch the show.  Nothing really notable about this one, just a fun pointless movie.

Cruise and Cameron Diaz have great chemistry and they are both really funny in this movie. I loathe Tom Cruise and sometimes wonder if he is actually the Anti-Christ.  I wholeheartedly believe that man will run for President one day and that’s when we know the Scientologists are making their move. If they can maneuver their most popular member into a position of power we are all screwed.  It scares me because the American public is stupid and can be easily manipulated.  The Scientologists are crazy and dangerous people, their poster boy Tom Cruise is no different.  That is all beside the point though because as much as I don’t like him I can’t ignore the plain and simple truth, the guy is a hell of an actor.  He has a great track record and must be using some kind of cult voodoo because the man simply does not age.  In this movie he is so funny I can’t help but laugh.  He is so calm and collected all the time and another credit to his ability is that he does great stunts. I think you can see that he has fun in this movie; it shines through his performance and adds quite a bit to the movie.  Cruise is a veteran who knows his trade now and he just keeps making hits. This movie doesn’t really qualify as a hit for him but if a hater like me can recognize so much to like about it I think that anybody can.

Cameron Diaz, like Cruise, doesn’t seem to age very much.  I have never been a really big fan of hers either and while I don’t love most of her movies I can’t really say she hasn’t been successful.  It’s hard in the acting business to stick around as long as she has and she has done very well at that. I’m just not the biggest fan because most of the movies she makes are really not up my alley, and I have never been able to get over her performance as a really trashy woman in Feeling MinnesotaShe is a beautiful woman though and she can be really funny when she wants to be.  I think she is great in this movie and she works very well with her psychotic co-star.  Her panicking persona is hilarious matched up with the cool and calm Cruise who just keeps doing crazy things.

I was specifically told this movie was garbage at work the other day when I mentioned we were about to watch it.  I told my co-worker that he was crazy and needed to lighten up a bit.  Yes this is a stupid movie but there can be plenty to like about stupid movies sometimes.  This is a time when you see that but I will admit I don’t see it often.  I will not watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith because I can see how stupid that one is on the surface.  For all I know it is just as fun as this one though and I am missing out.  If you have seen this movie let us know what you thought about it.  I enjoyed it and continue to enjoy it every time we watch it so I’m telling you that this one is worth your time.

AMBER’S REVIEW

When I first saw the trailer for this movie I was intrigued. And I couldn’t really tell you why. It just seemed like it would be really funny. So I made Ryan watch it. And we actually liked it a lot. Neither of us are huge fans of either Tom Cruise or Cameron Diaz, but this movie is really great. They have incredible on-screen chemistry. If you haven’t had a second to check this one out you should. It’s a pretty funny and light hearted movie for those nights you don’t feel like thinking too much.

knightanddayThis is a really cool poster. It has a lot of nice blocky typography and it lines up. It is even skewed a bit and I always like that. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are so famous that having their silhouettes on the cover actually works. It alludes to the plot instead of giving too much away. I think this poster is really successful.

RYAN’S REVIEW

One of my favorite things to do over the past ten years was stroll around the movie sections of stores and find older movies that I just had to have in our collection.  I have always been a specific shopper when it comes to this, I don’t buy just anything I buy the movies that were significant in one way or another.  Either they were significant to me personally or they were just a great movie that was worth owning.  These days when I stroll through the movie aisles in stores I only find myself walking away disappointed.  First of all, the sections stores reserve for movies are shrinking at a regular rate as demand for DVDs and even Blu-rays are dropping all the time.  Secondly, it’s just such a challenge these days to even find a movie I want.  At this point I own nearly every movie I ever loved and all the new releases are much too expensive to purchase when they are first released and for several months after.  I’m saying all this to simply explain how this movie came into my possession. I was reaching, that’s all it really amounts to.  I just really wanted to buy a movie and remembered this one well enough to pick it up for a cheap price.  To say it simply, this was a swing and a miss.  I bought this movie and it’s mine now but if I could go back in time I would simply keep my five bucks, this was not even close to worth that.

When I first saw this movie I was in high school and I think that is why I remembered it fondly.  The idea of creating a woman that will look incredible and do anything and everything you want is an idea that appeals to any teenage boy whether you have succeeded in getting any or not.  Does anything matter more to a teenage boy than trying to score with a chick? It’s something that dominates the mind of us of all through that rough stretch of adolescents where it seems like something that is all but impossible to achieve.  I watched this movie then and thought it was awesome and also watched the TV show with the smoking hot Vanessa Angel and thought that was awesome too.  Having had an opportunity to revisit this movie now, all I can say is that my thoughts and feelings about the film were far too influenced by the raging and uncontrollable hormones that hit young men in their mid to late teens.

I wasted a night of my life watching this movie again and I will never get that time back.  I feel compelled to apologize to my wife for making her sit through the beginning, even though she slept through most of it.  This movie is not good; it’s not even on a level below good.  It’s stupid, plain and simple.  The movie doesn’t even seem to have any direction as it progresses.  It goes from bad to pointless to simply being a complete and utter waste of time. Of course it is harder to watch a movie like this today given that we know computers don’t have the capability of creating supermodel looking women or anything animate at all for that matter.  The thoughts and feelings of these teenage boys and the problems they have may be timeless and something any generation can relate to but that isn’t enough.  This is a ridiculous movie and there is nothing in it that can make it worth any of your time.

John Hughes made many great movies throughout his career but this was not one of them.  It is funny to see a really young Robert Downey Jr. in the film with a crazy hair style that can only belong to the 80s but you can just Google a picture of that and save yourself some time.  Anthony Michael Hall is one of our main characters again doing another movie with his biggest supporter in Hughes.  Kelly LeBrock looks great but having spent a lot of time growing up watching Vanessa Angel play the same role I don’t think much of LeBrock. Bill Paxton is only worth mentioning because he is turned into a giant pile of shit but this is probably a movie he doesn’t include in his resumé.

So let me do you a favor and spare you the time you yourself could waste on this movie, it’s not worth it.  I am literally feeling a lot of guilt because I talked my wife into watching it with me.  In any marriage you can’t afford for things to go this wrong when you persuade your spouse to do something they aren’t really interested in.  All it does is give all the leverage to them and make it harder the next time you try to talk them into something later on down the road.  Damn you Weird Science! My wife will win the next argument over what movie we will watch and it’s all because I was stupid enough to think there was something to this one.  Cool song, but nothing else to speak of with this one.

RYAN’S REVIEW

I’ve always felt there was a golden time for the comedies made by the Farrelly brothers and it was during the mid to late nineties around the time this one came out.  They had so many ridiculous but hilarious movies during that stretch.  This movie was their follow up to Dumb and Dumber and it preceded There’s Something About Mary.  The three of these movies are all crude and a bit silly but I think they were the best that these two brothers have made.  I have always been a fan of Me, Myself, and Irene as well but the sun was setting then on the type of comedy these guys make. In truth this isn’t my favorite of their films but I always find myself laughing and I tend to like it more and more each time I watch it.

This movie really isn’t all that different from Dumb and Dumber when you look at it on the surface. It’s about two idiots driving across country to get to a bowling tournament.  I think Woody Harrelson is awesome and he is one of my favorite actors but I don’t think he is really great in this movie.  I think Harrelson is better than playing such a crude and pathetic character.  I don’t find him funny so much in this one as I do desperate and desolate.  However Randy Quaid plays the Amish guy trying to adapt to the real world and I do think he is pretty funny in this movie.  I have never liked the ugly Quaid brother and have continuously found myself wondering how he managed to get so many roles over the years.  Of course he isn’t getting any now because he is in some sort of strange trouble of late.  I have paid little attention to whatever predicament he is in right now but everything I have heard has been weirder and weirder. He and his wife got themselves in some kind of legal trouble and are currently living in Canada with arrest waiting for them should they re-enter the United States.  Also peppered in the story is paranoia coming from Quaid and his wife claiming they fear for their lives from some sort of actor killing conspiracy.  It’s all rather weird and I don’t know what to make of it myself.

The funniest role in this movie has to go to one of the funniest men to ever grace the screen, Bill Murray.  Murray is just so deftly funny when allowed to do as he pleases and that is what he was allowed to do in this movie.  When filming the movie Murray would glance over the script to get a gist of what was going on and then simply winged it when the camera started rolling.  Nearly all his lines in the movie were improvised and that is where a comedian like Murray is at his best. I love the crazy hair he has in the end of the movie, it only adds to the humor of his character.  There is only one other role from this film that really matters and it’s that of Vanessa Angel.  She never really quite made it as a successful actress but geez what a smoking hot woman. She is merely sex appeal in this movie and she does a great job of looking really sexy.  When I was a young teenager I would often watch her on the television show Weird Scienceand I really liked seeing her in this film.

If you are a big fan of bowling, and/or crude and pervasive sexual comedy then this is the movie for you.  I think it’s really funny and I specifically think there are a few noteworthy performances that make it worth your time.  If you’re Amish, I’d steer clear but otherwise take the R rating into consideration when thinking about this one.  All in all though I would say that it is worth your time. Nothing significant here, just plain old dirty and perverted fun.

AMBER’S REVIEW

I absolutely do NOT care what anyone says about this movie, I love it. I think you can’t go wrong when a movie has both Woody and Bill. (Do I really need to say their last names?) This movie is funny. It makes no sense, really in the scheme of things, but even still it is a really funny movie. I have loved it for as long as I can remember.

kingpin

I can’t take this seriously. I mean [in my best Amy Poehler voice] really? The chick is bending over and it’s not even proportional  Ok I don’t even care. You guys, I love this movie and this poster is crazy ridiculously BAD, but I just don’t care. I love this stupid movie.
